Columbus Crew

The Columbus Crew is a founding member of MLS and one of 3 clubs owned by the late Lamar Hunt at the league’s inception. The Crew improved over its first 8 seasons before finishing with the league’s best record in 2004. After a down period, coach Sigi Schmid brought Columbus to the promise land, as the Crew won the 2008 MLS Cup. Led by club icon Guillermo Barros Schelotto, Columbus finished 2009 with the best record, but was upset in the first round of the playoffs.

Eddie Gaven made his MLS debut at 16 with the MetroStars, the youngest player in team history. Therefore, Gaven has been in the league for nearly a decade, despite being only 24. Gaven was traded to Columbus before the 2006 season, and in 2008, he scored the game-winning goal in the Eastern Conference Championship which brought the Crew to an eventual MLS Cup win.

Columbus began play when MLS started at Ohio Stadium, home of the Ohio State Buckeyes. In 1999, Crew Stadium (capacity: ), the first MLS soccer-specific stadium in the nation was built, and Columbus continues to play there today.
