Colorado Rapids

May 1, 2011

The Colorado Rapids are the defending MLS Cup champions, but success hasn’t always come their way. Previous coaches and ownership had fans on the verge of rioting, but manager Gary Smith has won their hearts with the trophy. Regional rivals with Real Salt Lake, the Rapids feature a hearty defense, a rock-solid midfield, and a multi-faceted attack.

KEY PLAYER:
Omar Cummings has made a name for himself as one of MLS’ top strikers. After a deal with England’s Aston Villa fell through in the offseason, the Jamaican forward is poised to have another impressive season. Cummings is extremely quick and long, and can unleash a rocket on goal with either foot. Teammate Conor Casey’s strong hold-up play complements Cummings’ game and is a reason why Colorado took home the 2010 MLS Cup.

STADIUM SITUATION:
The Rapids played at Mile High Stadium/Invesco Field for their first decade in existence. In 2007, the Rapids moved into Dick’s Sporting Goods Park (capacity: 19,680) in Commerce City, Colo. D.S.G. Park hosted the 2007 MLS First Kick, features a unique roof, and was the first soccer-specific stadium in MLS to paint the club’s city into the stands.

MAJOR TROPHIES WON: (1)
